Jeff Kirchner

Principal

I am excited to continue my time as the Principal at Hume Lake Charter School this year and loving the opportunity to work alongside the staff at such an amazing school. I have a Master’s in Educational Leadership from Grand Canyon University and an Administrative Services Credential from National University. Prior to my time at HLCS, I spent 16 years teaching a variety of subjects in a variety of school settings. I look forward to an amazing year and many successful years to come!

Jen Nelson

Vice Principal,
School Counselor

Jen Nelson has been the School Counselor at Hume Lake Charter School for over 10 years and thoroughly enjoys working alongside of students in this position. She has a Master’s in Education and Counseling and a Pupil Personnel Services Credential. Prior to her time at HLCS, she worked as an administrator at Point Loma Nazarene University. She and her family have been a part of the Hume community for 19 years.

Jen Johnson

Instructional Assistant

Currently, I am a mom of three kids (two enrolled at HLCS) and have been married for 16 years to Jay Johnson. We have lived at Hume for over 18 years. I have a Bachelors of Science in Biology from Westmont College and have worked for Hume Lake Christian Camps for 7 years and HLCS for 2 years.

Jenny Brannan

High School English

After graduating with a BA in Liberal Studies & teaching credential from Fresno Pacific University, I started my teaching career in Fresno, originally in Kindergarten. After receiving my first pink slip, I landed in junior high and realized I LOVED secondary students, so I stayed for 7 years! Now, having taught students ranging from preschool to junior high, I’m excited to influence students at the high school level. Recently, I discovered that I like the novel Frankenstein (you should read it).

Melissa Hamilton

Grades 3-4

After graduating from Biola University with a B.A. in Liberal Studies, Elementary Education and an M.A. in Education, I began my teaching career in Orange County. I taught third grade for five years before moving to Hume. I have been involved with Hume Lake Charter School in a variety of capacities since 2007. My favorite book is Miss Rumphius and my least favorite multiplication fact is 6 x 8.

Andrea King

Grades 5-6

I attended San Diego State University for my undergraduate degree, followed by the University of Redlands to complete my teaching credential. I have been teaching since 1995, with a break for a few years while my children were small. I have taught all grade levels from second grade through high school, but elementary ages are my favorite!

Brian Butler

High School History

Changing professional gears in my forties, I obtained my B.A. in History for secondary education from Grand Canyon University in 2019 and jumped right into teaching here at Hume Lake. I love history and enjoy the challenge of bridging the gap between students’ present environment and the ideas and events of the past which have shaped our world today. When I’m not at work (and sometimes when I am but don’t tell my boss) I enjoy a good Dodger baseball game and spending time with the family.

Alex Hamilton

High School Math and Science

Alex Hamilton studied health science at California Baptist University and began his educational career during 2016 in Monterey, California after working as an EMT. There he taught chemistry and environmental science along the tranquil Central Californian coast. Since then, he has joined Hume Lake Charter School where he teaches high-school science and math. Alex is currently working on his master of arts in teaching science (5-12) through Western Governors University.

Guerda Prairie

I got my undergrad degree in history from the University of Northern Colorado, and then received my masters in Special Education from the University of Denver! I My husband and I love camping and exploring new places, both in the country and in the city whenever we can!

Jen Kirchner

Instructional Assistant

I have always been a teacher at heart, and after a 17-year career in corporate training and development, I found my teaching “happy place” in PK-12 education. I received a B.S. in Elementary Education and teaching credential through Grand Canyon University, and I am currently working on my M.S. in Instructional Technology, also through GCU. I have served in various classroom roles since 2017, and I am thrilled to be continuing my journey as an educator with the students and families at HLCS.
